Online Catalogue of the Library of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research

The Library

The library of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS) is a subject-specific reference library that provides access to literature and information sources in the fields of social science, social policy, contemporary history, and politics. Its holdings include media on the following and other topics:

  • European society, migration, ethnicity, and policies regarding immigration, refugees, and asylum
  • The concept of the nation, nationalism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and right-wing extremism
  • Issues related to the two German states, to division and unification, and to German nationhood, the politics of history and coming to terms with the past
  • Social policies, social precariousness, and social inequality
  • Protest movements in the Federal Republic of Germany (1949 - present)
  • Theory and history of violence, World War I and World War II, Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Middle East conflict, research on terrorism
  • History and politics of empires

Inter-library loans: the library is not connected to German inter-library loan services.

The reference library is open to the public.
Opening hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Work spaces, Wi-Fi, computers with internet access, a book scanner, a copier, and a reader-printer (microfilm / microfiche) are available to library users.


Other Databases

The HIS Archives Database

The database of the HIS archives provides an overview and brief information on individual collections as well as a complete list of holdings. The largest collection, occupying more than 1,200 meters of shelf space, is the special collection on "Protest, Resistance, and Utopia in the Federal Republic of Germany". It includes files, gray literature, leaflets, posters, photos, and periodicals.

Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict (SVAC)

The Working Group on War and Gender at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research is a member of the International Research Group "Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict" (SVAC). The HIS library supported this group in creating the database and organized its technical implementation. The SVAC-database is continuously updated. It currently includes 1,000 titles in German and English on "Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict". Most of these publications may be viewed in the HIS library.
